In the world of the 12-volt specialist, the term “car audio” used to describe the entire operation within a retail store’s four walls. However, in more and more of the successful businesses of 2021, these two words represent only a segment of the new term: customization.

While pristine sound reproduction is still at the core of most shops’ offerings, the true emphasis of the business now focuses on creating a powerful, unique driving experience, by any means necessary. There are comparatively few stores across the country that have accomplished this to a high degree. KarTunz in Pleasanton, Calif., is one of them.

Single-Source Simplicity
Founded in 2016, KarTunz set out to be the place where a client could pull into the driveway with a vision and leave with the vision turned to reality. The team prides itself on being able to perform almost every needed task under its own roof. The customer experience is extended by a showroom with wall displays for rims, audio and accessories, and a comfortable seating space with television and refreshments. The staff add to the experience as a close-knit group, communicating regularly to turn clients’ adjectives into actionable lists of products, parts and required labor.

Attracting Affluence, By Appointment Only
Owners can plan a business, but customers determine its direction. In KarTunz’s case, the store’s capability, coupled with the tech-driven prosperity of Pleasanton and the surrounding areas, attracts an upscale clientele. According to Alonso Vasquez, senior technician and 30-year industry veteran, 80 to 90 percent of the vehicles that come into the bay fall into the luxury, exotic or collectible categories. As almost every job requires some level of customization, KarTunz works on an appointment-only basis to ensure sufficient time for each client.

All of Time and Space to Create

The ideal hires would work in an expansive production area that features ample space between high-value cars, trucks and boats. In addition, segmented areas support work for wheels and tires, window tint and film, fabrication, woodworking, mechanics and suspension, and powder coating. Two large bay doors as well as three industrial evaporative coolers moderate the bay temperature.

Because of the appointment-only format, each job is scheduled with time for techs and automotive specialists to do things right. The non-rush scheduling also allows staff members to learn certain vehicle characteristics and cross-train on different vehicle specialties, increasing their value and skill.

“I love the challenge of working on luxury and exotic vehicles,” added Vasquez. “Today we have a 2020 Porsche 911 Carrera, and 2020 Tesla Model 3 and a 2020 Mercedes-Benz GL63. The other day I did a full audio system on a 2016 Lamborghini Aventador. It’s always something new.”

Come Here to Grow & Do Your Best Work
“I started at KarTunz four years ago  and it’s been great. The staff is like a small family and we all do our part to make sure each customer has a great experience from front to back.
We close at 6 daily and take weekends off. Plus we receive medical, dental and vision insurance. You can really make a career here, and with the quality of cars we work on, you won’t get bored. If you love working on beautiful exotic cars in a clean, no-rush environment, KarTunz could be the place for you.”

Owner Tracy Porter sees growth for the business as the primary objective heading into 2022, and knows that hiring the right people is essential, but sustaining a high-value culture in the store is crucial to keeping them.  “Our technicians are responsible for the final piece of the experience we promise our clients during the sales presentation,” he said. “So we need to make sure they have all of the time, tools and resources to perform and create at a high level.”
